Palmetto Bluff
Bluffton, South Carolina Β· Lowcountry
A 20,000-acre private, gated community along the May River. Palmetto Bluff is anchored by the Montage Palmetto Bluff, a AAA 5-Diamond resort. It's a riverfront and marsh environment (not beachfront), so the vibe is more "Lowcountry retreat" than "beach vacation." Spanish moss, kayaking, dolphins, quiet evenings by the water.
Palmetto Bluff is located in mainland Bluffton, not on Hilton Head Island. The nearest ocean beach (Coligny Beach on Hilton Head) is about 35-40 minutes by car. The tradeoff for that is privacy, safety, and a distinctly different atmosphere from a typical beach resort.
"It feels like a secret the South has been keeping. Refined without being pretentious, and genuinely great with kids."
5-Bedroom Residence
Fully furnished Lowcountry estate homes directly on the Montage grounds. 5,100 to 5,700+ sq ft with lagoon or May River views, screened porches, chef kitchens, private boat docks. The big advantage here: you get full access to every Montage amenity, including pools, restaurants, kids club, and concierge. Everything is handled for you.
Inside Palmetto Bluff
Privately owned 5 to 6 bedroom homes within the Palmetto Bluff gates, listed on VRBO or Airbnb. You'll be inside the same gated community with the same beautiful surroundings. The homes themselves can be just as impressive as the Montage residences. However, there are important differences in what you'll have access to.
Bluffton or Hilton Head Island
Staying outside Palmetto Bluff, in a luxury home in nearby Bluffton or on Hilton Head Island. The big upside: you're closer to (or right on) the beach, and you'll save significantly compared to staying inside Palmetto Bluff. The tradeoff: you lose the Palmetto Bluff gates, grounds, and atmosphere entirely.
If you go with a private rental instead of the Montage, you'll want to arrange these services independently. The good news: the Bluffton/Hilton Head area has excellent options.

β Kids Menus Available Reservations May Prioritize Resort GuestsCharming historic town about 30 min from Palmetto Bluff. Waterfront seafood, ice cream shops, galleries, walkable downtown. Very stroller-friendly. Worth an afternoon or evening outing. beaufortsc.org
β All Ages Public (30 min drive)Orlando to Palmetto Bluff via I-95 North. Straightforward route: I-95 N to Hardeeville, SC exit, then a short local drive to the community gates.
Best airport: Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV).
Distance: ~24 miles / ~40 min from SAV to Palmetto Bluff.
Airlines from MCO: Delta via Atlanta (ATL), American via Charlotte (CLT). No non-stop flights from Orlando to Savannah. Total travel time including connection and drive is comparable to just driving.
Alternate airport: Charleston (CHS): about 100 miles / 2.5-hour drive from Palmetto Bluff. More non-stop options but a longer post-flight drive.
This is important to understand upfront. Palmetto Bluff is riverfront, not oceanfront. The nearest good family beach (Coligny Beach on Hilton Head) is 35-40 minutes away by car. If the family wants daily beach time, that's a significant drive each way. The pools and river activities on property are great, but they're not the ocean.
This is the single biggest decision for Palmetto Bluff. The Montage residence includes everything (pools, kids club, restaurants, concierge, baby gear). A private rental is cheaper and can be equally beautiful, but you'll likely lose access to Montage amenities unless the home includes Palmetto Bluff Club membership. Always ask before booking.
The gated community with 24/7 security is a real asset when traveling with young kids. The interior roads are quiet, flat, and low-traffic. Kids can safely bike and explore. This is one of Palmetto Bluff's strongest selling points for families.
The community holds July 4th events and the Montage typically runs holiday programming. Private fireworks are regulated by Beaufort County. Confirm specifics with the Montage or your rental management before arrival.
July 4th week at Palmetto Bluff books up quickly. Montage residences in particular go fast. Contact Montage directly for 2026 rates and availability as early as possible.
Outer Banks
North Carolina Β· Barrier Island Chain
A 100-mile barrier island chain off the North Carolina coast. Wild horses on the beach, enormous oceanfront vacation homes, and a laid-back coastal vibe. OBX is famous for large group rentals: big houses, big porches, ocean right in front of you.
The key is picking the right town. For a family with young kids, Corolla (quietest, safest beach for toddlers) and Duck (quiet with a walkable village) are the top recommendations. Avoid Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head if you want to stay away from the more commercial, party-adjacent areas.
"OBX isn't trying to be a resort. It's just one of the most beautiful stretches of coast in America, and the houses are spectacular."
Corolla or Duck
This is where OBX shines. Enormous 5-6 bedroom oceanfront homes with private pools, hot tubs, game rooms, home theaters, massive decks looking over the Atlantic. Use a local agency like Twiddy or KEES rather than generic Airbnb for better quality assurance and local support. Corolla is the top recommendation for toddler safety (quieter, gentler beach slope).
Corolla
A gated resort community in Corolla with 400+ homes and 630 homesites, an 18-hole Rees Jones golf course, tennis courts, swimming pools, and private beach access. This is the closest thing to a "Palmetto Bluff style" gated resort experience on the Outer Banks. You get the big private house feel with added community amenities and security.
4-Bedroom Residence
OBX's premier luxury resort, set between the Atlantic and Currituck Sound in Duck. The property offers 3 pools (including a kids pool), 4 restaurants, a spa, complimentary bikes, and full concierge service. The experience is polished and the location in Duck is excellent for families.
OBX has a well-developed private chef, housekeeping, and baby gear market. These services are what let you turn a big private vacation home into a resort-level experience.

β Toddlers OK (car seat required, bumpy ride)corollawildhorsetours.com βExcellent state aquarium with alligators, river otters, sharks, and the Sea Turtle STAR rehab center. About 35-45 min from Corolla. Great rainy-day plan.
β All Agesncaquariums.com βWide, uncrowded Atlantic beaches. The gentle slope in Corolla is ideal for toddlers wading. Bring a UV beach tent for baby shade. Best beach time is before 10 AM or after 4 PM (cooler sand, lower UV).
β Baby Needs UV Shade TentLargest living sand dune on the East Coast, in Nags Head (about 25-35 min from Corolla). Kids love running on the dunes. Great sunset views.
β Toddlers Can Explore the Basencparks.gov βWhere the Wright Brothers made their first flight. In Kill Devil Hills, about 45 min from Corolla. Interactive exhibits and visitor center.

β Older Kids and AdultsMini golf, bumper cars, go-karts, arcade. In Kill Devil Hills, about 45 min from Corolla. Good backup plan if weather turns or kids need a change of scene.

Best airport: Norfolk International (ORF).
Distance: ~96 miles / 2 to 2.25 hours from ORF to Corolla.
Distance: ~82 miles / 1.75 to 2 hours from ORF to Duck.
Non-stop from MCO: Southwest, Frontier, Spirit, and Breeze all fly non-stop to Norfolk (~15 flights per week). About 2 hours in the air. Check Southwest for best fares.
Alternate: Raleigh-Durham (RDU): non-stops on Delta and Southwest, but the drive to northern OBX is 3 hours 45 min. Only makes sense if staying in southern OBX.
Orlando to OBX is about 800 miles. With an 18-month-old, this would require an overnight stop (Savannah, GA or Wilmington, NC are good midpoints). Budget an extra travel day each way.
The Wright Memorial Bridge is the main artery into OBX and it backs up significantly during holidays. Arrive Tuesday June 30 or Wednesday July 1 to avoid the worst of it. Friday July 3rd arrivals can face 2 to 5 hour delays. Plan your grocery run for arrival day before the afternoon rush.
Reddit and OBX family forums consistently point to Corolla for families with toddlers. The beach is wider, less crowded, and has a gentler slope. It's the quietest area of OBX, well away from the commercial strip of Kill Devil Hills. The wild horses are a bonus.
OBX has an established network of agencies: Twiddy, KEES, Village Realty, Outer Banks Blue. These curate their best properties, have local staff for issues, and can arrange chef service, housekeeping, and early check-in. Better quality assurance and support than random Airbnb listings.
For an 18-month-old: bring a UV beach tent, UV swimwear, water shoes (sand reaches 100 degrees F), and a USCG-approved life jacket with leg strap. Plan beach time before 10 AM or after 4 PM. Don't let young children play in or dig sand dunes (collapse risk). Fill any holes dug in the sand before leaving.
Premium OBX rentals for July 4th week book 6 to 12 months in advance. Contact Twiddy, KEES, or The Sanderling soon to secure the best properties. 5+ bedroom homes go quickly.
Side by Side
Palmetto Bluff vs. Outer Banks
Both destinations work well for a family July 4th trip. The differences come down to environment, beach access, and how much you want handled for you vs. doing it yourself.

Choose Palmetto Bluff if...
- β The Montage resort experience appeals (and you're comfortable with the pricing). A private rental inside PB saves money but means handling more yourself.
- β You prefer driving over flying, especially with a baby in tow. The 4.5-hour drive from Orlando is easy.
- β The Lowcountry atmosphere (river, marsh, Spanish moss) sounds more appealing than open ocean.
- β Daily ocean beach time is nice to have but not the main priority. You're happy with pools, river, and occasional beach day trips.
Choose Outer Banks if...
- β Having the ocean right outside the house is important. This is OBX's biggest advantage.
- β You're comfortable creating your own "resort" by hiring a private chef and maid service. The infrastructure for this is well-established in OBX.
- β Wild horses, big dunes, and an unpretentious beach town vibe sounds right. OBX is the opposite of "polished resort."
- β The group is happy flying to Norfolk and renting a car. The 2-hour non-stop flight is quick, but you'll still need about 2 hours of driving to reach Corolla on the other end.
